Session 1: Temple of Mistra

This session began with us double checking over our characters. We'd spent a good few hours the week before sorting out our characters, their back stories etc. Cora was a pirate - betrayed by someone she thought to be a friend. Car is an entitled trouble maker, trying to make his way in the world one hat at a time. Yelena...well Yelena's life is one tragic experience after the next, we won't go into that.

We begin with a little bit of background on Cormyr:

Until recently, there were no Mistral temples, when Nadia Arthes convinced Waylon to bolster the cities economy, and so began the construction of a temple on the site of a ruined citadel. The local Mistral cleric was excited to hear of this.

When we arrive (separate) each of us come upon a note tacked to a wall. The exact wording has since been forgotten, but here's what I took from it:

"Hi Strong people, see bloke in blue at Wivenwatch Inn for riddle and monies before 23rd. TD (Taernaster Dranach)"

In the inn, we find a nervous Merlin (TD). He tells us that he's confused about the new temple, he tried to see the Lady Arthes, but was rebuffed by a man called Fenbras. The Purple Dragons (jokes about this later) investigated but found nothing - we reckon the authorities don't care as chapel brings lots of taxes and monies.

TD tells us that should we penetrate the temple, he will give us 2000GP...each. A sense motive reveals he speaks only in truths. He is leaving to the 'head temple place' and shall be back in 10 days.

And so we head out! We reach the temple on the river. With a DC 17 Spot check, we see the temple guards on the walls around the top of the courtyard. The courtyard itself is made of obsidian slabs, with two stone statues of women forming an arch over the temple. There are also 4 temples to Mistra, and 4 visitors to the temple.

Car approaches the priest, Shan Thar, and asks about joining the Mistran order. He's told that should we pay 25GP we can join. So we do (later discovered this was probably a bad move - but it worked out in the end). We are taken along with other supplicants through a set of double doors into the temple. There is an altar in the centre of the room, and Fenbras tells us we must change into vestements and leave our belongings.

After three days, during which Car keeps prestidigitating hats, and Cora despairs of the loss of her rapier, we 'graduate' and move through a second set of double doors into the heart of the temple. There are statues of Mistra in alcoves, and Fenbras pulls our a 'Starry Gnossus' - a dark globe with twinkling points of light inside.

Unfortunately we all failed our Will saves, and so we are taken for 'processing' (cause that's always a good thing).

All sorts starts kicking off.

We fight Fenbras and the guards once we've broken through the Will. We kill them all (Boo Yah!), and get loot (woot!): heavy mace, 10 chakrams, cloak of resistance +1, scroll of restoration, full plate, disc of secrets and a set of keys.

There are 5 doors off this large room. Through one we find an antechamber, off which there is a bedroom, with 8 heads on the wall with glass eyes. There are journal entries, ranting about how he hates worshiping Mistra while the 'true one' must be hidden.
Through another door there is a second bedroom, this one dusty and obviously hasn't been used for a long time.

Down another door, the corridor smells of offal to a weird chamber with crusty, manky liquid - its a toilet cistern.

Another door we find many statues, and our rogue detects mechanical devices by the door at the opposite end.

We come up with the plan to throw the severed heads at the door in order to set off the traps. For now though, we go back to the other bedroom and sleep.

Next time: Severed Head Bowling
